Since the start of the new season, Fortnite looks better than ever. That’s because it now uses Unreal Engine 5.1. One of the new graphical features that looks great from the ground up is Lumen: how to enable Lumen in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1?

Graphics quality might not be the first thing you’d expect from a Battle Royale game. If you compare Fortnite to other competitors of the same genre, its most outstanding feature over the years has never been its looks. This situation is slowly changing.

Yes, it still has its own art direction. It gives the game more of a fairytale feel than a very realistic one. But Epic Games has managed to take this atmosphere much further, thanks to its new graphics engine.

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 has better textures, a great lighting system, shadows and of course many more special graphic details thanks to the Lumen technology.

Without further ado, let’s talk about how you can enable Lumen technology in Fortnite on both PC and next-gen consoles.

How to Enable Lumen in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 on PC

The fact that it works seamlessly on all platforms is one of the main reasons why Fortnite is preferred by millions of players. It’s in a very good state compared to its rival, which has performance problems even on the best systems, such as Warzone 2.

But the fact that Fortnite is well optimized can not relieve players who want to take advantage of all the features of Unreal Engine 5.1, especially Lumen. After all, if you use these technologies with the highest settings, you’ll need a very good computer to avoid FPS drops.

Learn how to enable Lumen in Fortnite on PC:

  1. Open Fortnite and go to Settings.
  2. In the Video section, find Rendering Mode and select DX12.
  3. (Lumen and other new graphic technologies won’t work on DX11.)
  4. After that, set Nanite Virtualized Geometry to On.
  5. Then you can set the Global Illumination to Lumen High or Epic.

These settings make the shadows and highlights in Fortnite incredible. However, since this puts too much strain on your computer, it is inevitable that you will experience FPS drops. Make sure you do not lag behind your opponents, because in competitive games like Fortnite, performance always comes first.

Also note that you cannot change the Lumen and other detailed graphics settings during gameplay. After you make these settings, you will have to restart the game. Therefore, you should make the necessary changes before starting a new Battle Royale game.

How to Enable Lumen in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 on PS5/Xbox Series X|S

Fortnite not only enjoys the benefits of Unreal Engine 5.1 on PC. You can also use these settings, especially Lumen, on new generation consoles. However, if you want the game to look better, you will have to do without a very large performance boost.

As Epic Games tells us in its official blog, you’ll have to disable the 120 FPS mode to open Lumen in Fortnite on consoles. So, if you agree to play the game at 60 FPS, you can take advantage of these new technologies.

Learn how to enable Lumen in Fortnite on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S:

  1. Open Fortnite and go to Settings.
  2. In the Video section, find 120FPS Mode and select Off.
  3. After that, Lumen settings will be automatically enabled.

As always, it is not possible to make detailed graphics settings on consoles, as it is on PC. However, that does not really matter, because Fortnite runs very smoothly, no matter which FPS mode you choose.

We look forward to seeing what Epic Games can do with Unreal Engine 5. You can find comparison videos of Fortnite’s new graphics features on Youtube. Although the game looks great on the highest settings, you need to have a high FPS to get the flick that will bring you victory.

Note that new visual technologies like Nanite and Lumen are only available in Battle Royale mode and are not (currently) supported in Fortnite Creative. But we will probably have this update in the near future as well.
