PlayStation has finally revealed that a slim version of the PlayStation 5 console will officially be coming to stores later this year.
The news was broken on the PlayStation blog, after months of speculation that a new PS5 slim console was on the way. The main differences between the newer model and the original console will include a new 30% slimmer design. It’ll also weigh 18% percent less than the existing Digital Model, and 24% lighter than the current standard model. It’ll have four cover panels – and also goes from having two cover panels to four. There’s no word yet on whether your covers for the existing models will work with the new units.
Crucially, the new digital model will come with a huge difference, as it’ll actually support upgrading from a Diskless model to one with a Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive. This will be sold separately, for a cost of an additional $79.99 USD/€119.99 or £99.99 GBP. The new model will also be available in the very near future – in fact, you’ll be able to buy it as soon as November from the PlayStation Direct Store in the US and at “select local retailers”. It’ll then roll out globally “in the following months”. It’ll replace the current console inventory, so you’ll gradually see the old version disappear from shelves as stock sells through.
The new version of the console will also come with a Horizontal Stand – there’ll also be a new Vertical Stand for sale separately that is compatible with both the original and new models for $29.99/€29.99/£24.99. The new console will arrive soon after the upcoming Spider-Man 2 release date.
