In Starfield, Ship Command is a skill in the Social category. By levelling up this skill, players can increase the number of active crew members they can have at once. As a Master-tier skill, players will need to invest 12 skill points in Social skills before it can be unlocked. Later ranks are locked behind challenges.
Ship Command skill ranks

| Rank 1 | Players can have up to 4 active crew members. | Destroy or board 5 ships with a crew of two or more. |
| Rank 2 | Players can have up to 5 active crew members. | Destroy or board 25 ships with a crew of two or more. |
| Rank 3 | Players can have up to 6 active crew members. | Destroy or board 50 ships with a crew of two or more. |
